UTR and RRN Number: Meaning, Format and How to Track Payment

UTR stands for Unique Transaction Reference, the code that identifies an NEFT or RTGS payment. IMPS and UPI payments carry a 12-digit RRN (Retrieval Reference Number) instead. Quote the number, with the date and amount, to trace or prove a payment.

What do UTR and RRN mean?

UTR (Unique Transaction Reference): created for every NEFT and RTGS payment. No two payments share one.
RRN (Retrieval Reference Number): the 12-digit reference of an IMPS or UPI payment. UPI apps often call it the UPI transaction ID or UPI Ref No.
Both are created automatically by the banking system. You can't choose or change them.
Both the sender's and the receiver's bank record the same number, which is why it helps trace money between banks.

Where to find your UTR or RRN

Bank statement or passbook: inside the narration line of the payment.
Net banking or app: in the transaction details.
SMS or email alert: banks often include it in the debit or credit message.
Customer care: your bank can look it up from the date and amount.

How to use a UTR or RRN to trace money

Receiver says money hasn't come: send them the UTR or RRN. They can search their own statement for it.
Still not found: give your bank the number, date and amount. For NEFT and RTGS, your bank's customer facilitation centre can trace it with the receiving bank.
Money debited but not credited: wait for the automatic return (NEFT within 2 hours of the batch, RTGS within 1 hour, IMPS and UPI by the next day), then raise a complaint quoting the number.
No reply from your bank: complain to the RBI Ombudsman on the RBI complaint portal, quoting the number.

The UTR or RRN, with the date and amount, is your proof of payment in any dispute. Keep it until the matter is settled.

UMRN	Auto-debit (NACH) mandates for EMIs, SIPs, insurance	Created by NPCI when an auto-debit mandate is registered. Quote it to stop or query the mandate.
ARN	Card refunds	A reference that links a card refund to the original purchase. Ask the merchant for it if a refund hasn't reached your card.
App transaction ID	Some UPI apps	An app's own order or transaction number. It may differ from the 12-digit UPI RRN; banks need the RRN.

FAQs

What is the full form of UTR?

Unique Transaction Reference. It identifies one NEFT or RTGS payment.

Is UTR the same as RRN?

They do the same job. NEFT and RTGS use a UTR; IMPS and UPI use a 12-digit RRN.

How many digits does a UTR have?

An RTGS UTR has 22 characters. An NEFT UTR usually has 16. IMPS and UPI references have 12 digits.

Can I find the date from a UTR?

Yes for RTGS and IMPS references, which carry the date. Usually for NEFT: in our experience the UTR includes the date, but RBI doesn't publish the layout. Not reliably for UPI.

Where is the UPI transaction ID?

In your UPI app's transaction details (often called UPI Ref No.) and on your bank statement after UPI/DR or UPI/CR.
