IFSC stands for Indian Financial System Code. It is an 11-character code that identifies one bank branch, such as SBIN0001234. Payment systems like NEFT, RTGS and IMPS use it to send money to the right bank. The money is then credited using the account number alone.

IFSC only tells the payment system which bank and branch to send the money to. The receiving bank then credits the money using the account number alone, as RBI requires.

Where to find your IFSC

Where is IFSC used?

What happens if you enter a wrong IFSC?

MistakeWhat happens
Right bank, wrong branchThe money still reaches the account, because the bank credits by account number.
Another bank's IFSCThe payment goes to that bank. If no such account exists there, it is returned to you (NEFT within 2 hours of the batch, RTGS within 1 hour).
Another bank's IFSC, and that account number exists thereThe money can be credited to a stranger. Contact your bank at once with the reference number; recovery is not guaranteed.
Invalid or closed IFSCYour bank app usually refuses it, or the payment is returned.

Before you pay, check the account holder's name your bank shows. Since 1 April 2025 banks must offer this name check free for NEFT and RTGS.

IFSC of merged banks

When banks merged, their branches got new IFSCs of the bank they joined. RBI's October 2026 list has none of the old codes below, so ask the receiver for their current IFSC.

Can an IFSC change?

Yes. An IFSC can change or stop working when banks merge, or when a branch is merged, moved or closed. RBI's list changes every few months: between April and October 2026 over 10,000 codes were added and about 190 dropped. If a payment comes back, ask the receiver for their current IFSC, update the saved payee, and use a new cheque book if your bank issues one.

History of IFSC

  1. RBI launches NEFT, which uses the IFSC to route each payment to the right branch.

  3. Six more banks merge into PNB, Canara, Union Bank and Indian Bank; their old codes are phased out.

  4. Banks must show the receiver's name, free, before NEFT and RTGS payments, catching many wrong-IFSC and wrong-account mistakes.
