How PMJJBY works
Your bank or post office holds a master policy with a life insurer. When you join, you are added to that policy and the premium is debited once a year from your account. If you die while covered, your nominee claims through the same branch and the insurer pays ₹2 lakh into the nominee's account.
- Pure life cover: it pays only on death. There is no maturity amount and no surrender value, which is why the premium is low.
- Any cause: illness, accident, natural calamity, murder and suicide are all covered (after the 30-day lien period for non-accidental deaths).
- On top of other insurance: the ₹2 lakh is paid in addition to any other life policy you have.
Who can join
- Age 18 to 50. 18 completed, up to 50 (age nearer birthday). You cannot join after 50, but if you keep renewing, cover continues until 55.
- Any individual savings account with a participating bank or the post office. Institutional accounts are not eligible.
- Joint account: each holder can join separately, if eligible, by paying their own premium.
- One account only. Join through just one account. If you are enrolled twice, the cover is still only ₹2 lakh and the extra premium is forfeited.
- NRIs with an eligible account at a branch in India can join; the claim is paid only in rupees.
- No savings account? Open one first; a free Jan Dhan (PMJDY) account works. Aadhaar is the primary KYC for the account.
Premium and when it is debited
The premium is ₹436 a year per person, a little under ₹1.25 a day. It is taken in one instalment by auto-debit. If you join after June, you pay only for the quarters left in the 1 June–31 May cover year.
| You join in | Premium for the first year | Cover lasts until |
|---|---|---|
| June, July, August | ₹436 | 31 May |
| September, October, November | ₹342 | 31 May |
| December, January, February | ₹228 | 31 May |
| March, April, May | ₹114 | 31 May |
| Every renewal | ₹436 (full year) | Next 31 May |
- Renewal debit: the consent form lets the bank debit the renewal premium after 25 May and not later than 1 June each year, "until further instructions".
- Keep ₹436 in the account in the last week of May. If the balance is short on the due date, the cover stops.
- Where the money goes (full premium): ₹395 to the insurer, ₹30 to the business correspondent or agent (new enrolments only) and ₹11 to the bank for administration. If you enrol yourself online, the agent's share is meant to reduce the insurer's premium.
- Can it change? The rules say the premium is reviewed based on claims. It was raised only once, from ₹330 to ₹436 on 1 June 2022.
How to join
- At your branch, business correspondent (BC) or post office: fill the PMJJBY Consent-cum-Declaration Form (on jansuraksha.gov.in) and attach a KYC document if the bank doesn't already have one.
- Online: through your bank's net banking or mobile app, or the Jan Suraksha portal, which all 12 public sector banks and 28 Regional Rural Banks had joined by March 2026.
- Name a nominee. If the nominee is a minor, also name a guardian (appointee).
- Allow the auto-debit and keep the acknowledgement slip, which also serves as your certificate of insurance.
KYC documents accepted: Aadhaar, voter ID (EPIC), MGNREGA job card, driving licence, PAN card or passport.
The 30-day lien period
- What it is: for the first 30 days after you join, death from any cause other than an accident is not covered. No claim is payable for such a death.
- Accidents are covered from day one. The nominee must then show proof that the death was accidental.
- Who it applies to: anyone enrolling for the first time on or after 1 June 2021, and anyone who rejoins after dropping out or after a missed renewal.
- Renewing on time keeps you clear of a fresh lien period.
How the nominee claims
Claims are made at the bank or post office branch where the member had the account, not directly with the insurer.
- Get the form: the PMJJBY Claim-cum-Discharge Form from the branch or jansuraksha.gov.in.
- Submit it at the branch, preferably within 30 days of the death, with the documents below.
- Branch checks and forwards: it confirms the enrolment and premium, fills in the member's details and sends the claim to the insurer within 7 days.
- Insurer settles within 7 days and pays ₹2 lakh into the claimant's account. An SMS tells the claimant whether the claim was paid or rejected.
- Claim-cum-discharge form, filled and signed.
- Proof of the member's death (see the table below).
- Your KYC document (Aadhaar, voter ID, MGNREGA card, driving licence, PAN card or passport).
- First two pages of your passbook, an account statement or a cancelled cheque, with the IFSC of your branch.
- The advance discharge receipt for ₹2 lakh, signed and witnessed.
- Aadhaar and PAN numbers of the member and yourself are optional but useful.
- The appointee (guardian) named in the enrolment form claims on the minor's behalf.
- Documents are the same as for a nominee, with the appointee's KYC and bank account details.
- If there was no nominee, or the nominee died before the member, a legal heir claims.
- Add a succession certificate or legal heir certificate from a competent court or authority.
- If the nominee died first, add proof of the nominee's death too.
| Situation | Proof accepted (any one) |
|---|---|
| Proof of death | Death certificate from the registrar of births and deaths; or hospital discharge summary or certificate giving the date, time and cause of death; or a certificate from the last attending doctor, countersigned by a gazetted officer or a bank or public sector insurer officer; or a certificate from the District Magistrate, Tehsildar or another authorised executive magistrate |
| Accidental death within 30 days of joining | Any proof of death plus the FIR or panchnama and the post-mortem report; or a District Magistrate / executive magistrate certificate; or, for deaths such as snake bite or a fall from a tree, a hospital record giving the cause of death |
Premium debited but not sent to the insurer? The claims procedure says that if the bank or post office failed to remit the premium in time, it becomes liable to pay the claim itself.
When cover ends
- At 55 (age nearer birthday).
- Account closed, or not enough balance on the renewal date.
- You opt out.
- Duplicate cover: if you are enrolled through more than one account, only ₹2 lakh is paid and the extra premium is forfeited.
Renewal, rejoining and opting out
- Renewal is automatic while your consent stands: the bank debits ₹436 between 25 May and 1 June each year.
- Missed renewal? You can rejoin at any time, up to 50, by paying the premium for the quarters left. The cover is treated as fresh, so the 30-day lien applies again.
- To opt out, your consent runs "until further instructions", so the debit continues until you tell your bank or post office. Give them a written instruction to stop the PMJJBY auto-debit well before 25 May.
- Changing banks? Before closing the old account, enrol through the new one so you don't lose cover. Keep only one enrolment.
PMJJBY, PMSBY and APY
These three Jan Suraksha schemes were launched together on 9 May 2015 and are all joined through your savings account.
| PMJJBY | PMSBY | APY | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Life insurance | Accident insurance | Pension |
| Pays on | Death from any cause | Accidental death or disability | Monthly pension from 60 |
| Amount | ₹2 lakh | Up to ₹2 lakh | ₹1,000–₹5,000 a month |
| Cost | ₹436 a year | ₹20 a year | By age and pension chosen |
| Joining age | 18–50 | See the PMSBY guide | 18–40, non-taxpayers |
You can hold PMJJBY and PMSBY together. For an accidental death, the family can claim under both.
Problems and complaints
- Premium not debited or wrongly debited, form not processed: go to your branch first. For a bank's service failure, complain to the bank and then, after 30 days, to the RBI Ombudsman.
- Claim delayed: the branch has 7 days to forward it and the insurer 7 days to settle. Ask the branch for the date it forwarded the claim and the insurer's name; both are recorded on the claim form.
- Helplines: national toll-free 1800 180 1111 or 1800 110 001; state-wise numbers are on jansuraksha.gov.in.
Stay safe: the premium is only ₹436 a year, taken by auto-debit from your own account. Nobody needs your OTP, PIN or password to enrol you or to pay a claim, and claims are free. Report fraud on 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in.
