AIS Full Form: View, Download, PDF Password, Feedback, Form 168
Independent guide. We are not part of the Income Tax Department, and we never ask for your PAN password, account details or OTP.
AIS stands for Annual Information Statement. It is your yearly record, on incometax.gov.in, of what banks, employers, mutual funds, brokers, property registrars and others have reported to the Income Tax Department about you: TDS, interest, dividends, share and fund deals, property, foreign remittances and more. Check it, and correct it through feedback, before you file your return.

What is AIS?
The AIS is the Income Tax Department's yearly view of your money trail. Many organisations must report your transactions to the department against your PAN. The AIS puts all of that in one place, so you can see what the department already knows before you file your return, and flag anything that is wrong.
It has two purposes. For you, it helps you include every income and claim every tax credit; its summary (TIS) also pre-fills your return. For the department, it is a cross-check: income that appears in your AIS but not in your return is a common reason for a mismatch notice.
Not complete, not final. The AIS shows only what the department has received so far. You must report all your income in your return, even if it is missing from the AIS.
What AIS shows
The statement has two parts. Part A is general information: PAN, masked Aadhaar number, name, date of birth (or incorporation), mobile number, email and address. Part B holds the financial information, under these heads:
TDS/TCS information
Tax deducted or collected at source by your employer, bank, tenant, client or seller, with the information code, description and amount. See our TDS guide.
SFT information
Large transactions reported by banks, mutual funds, registrars and others in their Statement of Financial Transactions (SFT): for example deposits, interest, share and fund purchases, and property deals.
Payment of taxes
Advance tax and self-assessment tax you paid during the year.
Demand and refund
Tax demands raised and refunds issued during the year, with the year and amount.
Other information
Salary details from your employer's year-end TDS return, interest on income tax refund, dividends, securities and mutual fund transactions, outward foreign remittances and foreign currency purchases, and GST turnover (code EXC-GSTR3B) for businesses.
Foreign assets information
Since July 2026: foreign bank and custodial accounts, investments, interest and dividends reported by over 100 partner countries. Open it from Reports โ Foreign Assets Information on the Compliance Portal.
For each entry the AIS shows the reported value (what the source sent) and, if you or the source changed it, the modified value. The department removes duplicate reports before showing the data.
How information reaches your AIS
AIS vs TIS vs Form 168 (Form 26AS)
| AIS | TIS | Form 168 / 26AS on TRACES | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Detailed statement, entry by entry | Summary of the AIS, totals by category | Annual tax statement of TDS/TCS credit |
| Covers | TDS/TCS, SFT, taxes paid, refunds, interest, dividends, securities, foreign remittances, GST and more | Total salary, interest, dividend, rent, capital gains, business income, taxes paid | Only TDS/TCS-related data |
| Can you give feedback? | Yes, on each entry | No; it updates itself after AIS feedback | No; ask the deductor to correct its statement |
| Used for | Checking and correcting | Pre-filling your return | Confirming tax credit you claim |
| Where | Compliance Portal via incometax.gov.in; the app | Same AIS dashboard, TIS tile | e-File โ Income Tax Returns โ View Form 168 (Form 26AS for years up to 2025-26) |
The Income Tax Department sums it up this way: the AIS is the detailed data, the TIS is the summary, and your return is the final legal declaration.
How to view and download your AIS
- Type incometax.gov.in yourself and log in with your PAN and password. New users must register first.
- Open e-File โ Income Tax Returns โ View Annual Information Statement (AIS), or click the AIS tab on the dashboard.
- Click Proceed. You are taken to the Compliance Portal.
- Open the AIS tab, pick the financial year, and click the Annual Information Statement tile (or the Taxpayer Information Summary tile for totals).
- To save it, choose PDF or JSON for the whole statement. Each category can be downloaded separately as a spreadsheet (CSV).
The Income Tax Department launched the free "AIS for Taxpayer" app on 22 Mar 2023. It is on Google Play and the App Store.
- Install the app from the official store and check the publisher is the Income Tax Department.
- Register with your PAN.
- Enter the OTPs sent to the mobile number and email registered on the e-filing portal.
- Set a 4-digit PIN for future logins.
- View TDS/TCS, interest, dividends, share transactions, tax payments, refunds and other information, and give feedback from the app.
Useful when you have many entries to correct.
- Download your AIS as a JSON file, and the AIS Utility, from the AIS homepage.
- Open the utility. It needs internet once to check its version; after that it works offline.
- Click Import, choose the JSON file and enter the password: PAN in upper case + date of birth as DDMMYYYY.
- Add feedback on the entries and upload the feedback file back on the portal.
AIS PDF password
The downloaded PDF is password-protected. The password is your PAN in lower case followed by your date of birth (date of incorporation or formation for a company, firm or trust) as DDMMYYYY, with no spaces.
| File | Format | Sample (PAN AAAAA1234A, born 21 Jan 1991) |
|---|---|---|
| AIS PDF | PAN in lower case + DDMMYYYY | aaaaa1234a21011991 |
| JSON import in the offline utility | PAN in upper case + DDMMYYYY | AAAAA1234A21011991 |
Password not working? Check that the date of birth is the one on your PAN record, written with leading zeros (01 not 1), and that the letters are in the right case for the file.
Wrong entry? Give feedback
You can give feedback on any active entry under TDS/TCS, SFT or Other information. Click the entry, then the Optional button in the Feedback column, pick an option, fill in the details and click Submit. You can also select several entries for bulk feedback.
| Feedback option | Use it when |
|---|---|
| Information is correct | The entry matches your records. |
| Information is not fully correct | The transaction is yours but the amount is wrong. You enter the correct value. |
| Information relates to other PAN/Year | It belongs to someone else, or to a different financial year. |
| Information is duplicate / included in other information | The same transaction appears twice, or is already counted in another entry. |
| Information is denied | You never made this transaction. |
| Customised feedback | Depends on the category; for an income entry it includes "Income is not taxable". |
What happens after you submit
- At once: your feedback appears beside the entry, with the modified value next to the reported value. The TIS updates automatically.
- Confirmation: the Activity History tab records it, you can download an acknowledgement receipt, and you get an email and SMS. A consolidated feedback file (PDF) lists all your feedback other than "Information is correct".
- Sent to the source: if you say an entry is wrong, the department automatically asks the source (deductor, collector or reporting entity) to confirm. The entry shows whether feedback was shared, the date shared, the date the source responded, and its response.
- Source responds: it may accept your feedback fully or partly, or reject it. If it accepts, it must file a correction statement, and the corrected figure then flows into your AIS.
- Changed your mind? You can modify feedback; there is currently no limit on how many times.
Feedback is not a substitute for a correction. Missing or wrong TDS is fixed only when the deductor corrects its TDS statement. Contact your bank or employer too, and keep proof (bank statements, contract notes, sale deed) in case you get a notice.
Why check AIS before filing your ITR
- Nothing left out: savings and FD interest, dividends and a second employer's salary are the incomes most often missed. If they are in your AIS but not in your return, expect a mismatch query.
- Every credit claimed: match each TDS entry, and claim exactly the credit shown in Form 168/26AS.
- Pre-filled figures: your return is pre-filled from the accepted TIS values. Give feedback first, then start the return, so the pre-fill is right.
- Foreign assets: if foreign accounts or income appear, report them in Schedule FA and Schedule FSI of your return. Report all foreign assets and income even if the AIS shows none.
- Already filed? If your return left out something in the AIS, file a revised return. For AY 2026-27 you have until 31 Mar 2027. See our ITR guide.
Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Likely reason | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A transaction you never made | Wrong PAN quoted by the source, or someone misused your PAN | Give feedback "Information is denied" or "relates to other PAN/Year"; tell the bank or company |
| Same income shown twice | Reported by two sources, or in two entries | Give feedback "Information is duplicate" |
| Wrong amount | Error by the reporting source | Give feedback "Information is not fully correct" with the right value |
| TDS deducted but not shown | The deductor has not filed or has mis-filed its quarterly statement | Ask the deductor to file or correct it; check Form 168/26AS again later |
| Recent transactions missing | Not yet reported or processed | Report the income in your return anyway |
| PDF won't open | Wrong password case or date format | PAN in lower case + DDMMYYYY |

AIS under the Income-tax Act, 2025
The Income-tax Act, 2025 came into force on 1 Apr 2026. The AIS continues; only its legal references changed. In law, the annual information statement is a prescribed form: Form 26AS under the old Act, and Form 168 under the new Act. The Income Tax Department's Form 168 FAQs are titled "Annual Information Statement (AIS)".
| What | 1961 Act (up to 2025-26) | 2025 Act (Tax Year 2026-27 onwards) |
|---|---|---|
| Section | 285BB | 510 |
| Rule | Rule 114-I, Income-tax Rules 1962 | Rule 245, Income-tax Rules 2026 |
| Form | Form 26AS | Form 168 |
| Year shown for refunds and demands | Assessment year (AY) | Tax year |
Section 510 says the department will upload the annual information statement in your registered e-filing account. The portal, the AIS and TIS tiles, the feedback options and the app work as before. Income earned up to 31 Mar 2026 is still filed for AY 2026-27 under the 1961 Act.
Stay safe
Your AIS is visible only after you log in to your own account. Never open an "AIS mismatch" or "refund" link from an SMS, email or WhatsApp message. Type incometax.gov.in yourself. Never share your e-filing password, OTP or app PIN; the department will not ask for them.
- Your AIS PDF password is easy to guess for anyone who knows your PAN and birthday. Don't email or forward the file casually.
- A transaction you don't recognise could mean misuse of your PAN. Deny it in the AIS and contact the reporting bank or company. For fraud, call 1930 or use cybercrime.gov.in.

FAQs
What is the full form of AIS in income tax?
Annual Information Statement: a yearly statement on the e-filing portal of the income, tax and financial transactions reported to the Income Tax Department against your PAN.
What is the password for the AIS PDF?
Your PAN in lower case followed by your date of birth as DDMMYYYY, with no space. Sample: aaaaa1234a21011991 for PAN AAAAA1234A and birth date 21 Jan 1991.
What is the difference between AIS and TIS?
The AIS lists each reported transaction. The TIS is its summary, with category totals such as salary, interest and dividend, and is used to pre-fill your return. You give feedback in the AIS; the TIS can't be edited directly.
Is Form 26AS replaced by AIS?
No. Form 26AS (Form 168 from Tax Year 2026-27) still shows your TDS/TCS credit on TRACES. The AIS shows that and much more, such as interest, dividends, securities and foreign remittances.
Something in my AIS is wrong. Will I get a notice?
Give feedback on the entry before filing, and report your true income in the return. Your feedback is sent to the source for confirmation. Keep your own proof. A mismatch between your return and the AIS is a common reason for questions from the department.
My savings interest is in AIS. Is it taxable?
Yes, savings and FD interest are income and must be reported in your return. Any deduction you are eligible for is claimed separately in the return.
Can I change feedback I already gave?
Yes. There is currently no limit on how many times you can modify your feedback.
Does AIS show everything?
No. It shows only what the department has received so far. You must report all income in your return even if it is not in the AIS.
Is the AIS app official?
Yes. "AIS for Taxpayer" is a free app from the Income Tax Department on Google Play and the App Store. You register with your PAN and OTPs, then set a 4-digit PIN.
